LUNG FUNCTION – SPIROMETRY
Two measurements are made during the test. The first to measure precisely the breathing difficulty. A bronchodilator is then given to the patient and a second measurement is taken 20 minutes later, to quantify the reversibility of the obstruction.
The measurements are compared with respiratory standards by age and patient size (normal measurements). An annual review of spirometry, especially during pollination for patients allergic to pollen, is necessary.Monitoring the “peak flow” at home is useful for observing changes and manage the treatment.
